Soo Jin Chung, a Korean-Canadian conductor, combines musical sensitivity and a distinctive style to deliver imaginative storytelling through music. She has collaborated with orchestras in Canada, the United States, and Europe, with recent highlights including performances with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestre Métropolitain, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec. She was also invited to participate in the Orchestre Métropolitain’s Conducting Academy in Montréal for the 2024-2025 season while completing her final year of studies at The Juilliard School. Over the past two years, the mentorship of Alexander Shelley, Kensho Watanabe, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin has been particularly influential in her development as a conductor.
She began studying piano at an early age, though without regular formal training. The possibility of pursuing a career in music became real when she attended the Aspen Music Festival at age 17. She then pursued further piano studies, ultimately earning a master’s degree in piano performance. During these formative years, her deep passion for collaboration and chamber music naturally fostered her interest in conducting and her love for the symphonic and operatic repertoire.
Chung received a diploma in conducting from Juilliard in May 2025 and now resides in New York.
