The Philharmonie de Paris and the Paris Mozart Orchestra are pleased to announce that the second edition of the La Maestra International Competition for Women Conductors will take place from 3 to 6 March 2022.

Online applications for this second edition are open until Friday September 3 2021.
This competition is open to professional women conductors from all over the world, with no age limit.

    • — First Eliminatory Round (Quarter-final)

      Rehearsal and performance of a chosen orchestral work (25’)
    • On application each candidate must choose 2 pieces from the list of set works below. The Selection Committee will decide which of their two chosen works each of the 14 selected candidates (nominees) will be required to perform in the First Round of the Competition. Nominees will be informed of the Committee’s decision when the nominations are announced.

    • — Second Eliminatory Round (Semi-final)

      Rehearsal and performance of a solo concerto and an accompanied vocal work (50’)
    • All nominees will prepare the 4 pieces listed below. The concerto and vocal work to be performed by each of the 6 selected nominees in the Semi-final of the Competition will be decided by the drawing of lots at the end of the First Round.

      1- Clara Schumann, Piano Concerto in A minor Op.7 - 3rd movement (Edition Breitkopf) 10’
      2- Ravel, Piano Concerto in G major - 1st movement (Edition Durand) 9’30

      1- Don Giovanni K.527 Act I, No.2 Accompanied recitative « Ma qual mai s’offre… » and duet Donna Anna & Don Ottavio « Fuggi, crudele, fuggi ! » (Edition Bärenreiter) 7’
      2- Alma Mahler, 3 Lieder (orchestrated by David & Colin Matthews)

    • — Third Round (Final)

      1- General Rehearsal (60’)
      2- Concert Performance (30’)
    • The Final Round of the Competition will include the world premiere of a new work by Graciane Finzi, specially commissioned for La Maestra 2022. Each of the three finalists will perform this new piece, together with pieces chosen from the list of set works below.

      Nominees will prepare 2 different 16’-23’ selections from the repertoire list below (Programme 1 and Programme 2). No work should appear in both Programme 1 and Programme 2.

      The Competition Organisers will decide which of their two Programmes each of the 3 selected nominees will be required to perform in the Final Round of the Competition. Finalists will be informed of the decision following the result of the Semi-final.

      Mandatory contemporary piece : Graciane Finzi New work 8’ (World Premiere)
      The score of Graciane Finzi’s composition will be sent to all nominees in early December 2021.

    After sending your application form, you will receive an email regarding the payment of the competition registration fee (100€ plus bank charges). Registration will only be considered final upon receipt of payment.
